MOSCOW, Jan 26 — The Kremlin said today that control over Ukraine’s Donbas region remains central to Russia’s position in any peace deal, TASS reported following weekend talks in Abu Dhabi.

President Vladimir Putin has insisted that Russia will seize all of Donbas — currently 90% under Moscow’s control — unless Kyiv cedes it in negotiations. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the territorial issue, linked to the so-called “Anchorage formula” from last year’s US-Russia summit, as “fundamental” for Russia.

Kyiv has rejected giving up territory not captured by Russian forces. While the US-brokered Abu Dhabi talks were called “constructive,” they ended without an agreement, with further discussions expected next weekend. — AFP
