PETALING JAYA, Oct 5 — Police have confirmed a second fatality from the recent accident at the Bukit Kajang Toll Plaza, which earlier claimed the life of a toddler and injured several others.
Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof said the latest victim, a 48-year-old civil servant, died at 11am today while receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Hospital Kajang. This brings the total death toll from the crash to two.
“It is with deep regret that we confirm another victim has passed away. The deceased will be handed over to the next of kin after the post-mortem is completed,” he said in a brief statement.
Naazron added that investigations are still ongoing pending full reports from the relevant agencies.
The accident occurred on September 27 at around 10.50am when a lorry reportedly experienced brake failure and rammed into several vehicles at the toll plaza. The crash resulted in the immediate death of a 16-month-old boy and injured seven others.
Naazron previously said the collision involved four vehicles — a lorry, a car, and two sport utility vehicles — and was believed to have occurred when the lorry, carrying scrap iron from Semenyih to Putrajaya, lost control due to brake failure.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said investigators are awaiting a complete technical report before taking further action.
The 42-year-old lorry driver has been released on police bail, and statements from all involved parties have been recorded.
Following the incident, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) revoked the operating licence of the lorry company involved in the fatal crash.
