BANGKOK, April 24 — Thailand’s Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a petition accusing 44 current and former opposition lawmakers of ethics violations over their 2021 move to amend a law protecting the monarchy from criticism, according to Thai media reports.
SHAH ALAM, April 24 — The Selangor government will implement the Education Ministry’s policy allowing children to enter Year One at age six beginning with the 2027 school intake, including schools under the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS).
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari told the state assembly today that preparations are underway to recruit additional teachers and upgrade school facilities to accommodate the expected increase in enrolment.
He said the measures include plans to monitor and optimise classroom utilisation, with class sizes potentially reaching up to 45 pupils.
“Secondly, we will coordinate student data with the Selangor State Education Department to identify high-density areas. Thirdly, we will assess the need for more teachers,” he said during the state assembly sitting.
Amirudin was responding to an oral question from Noor Najhan Mohamad Salleh (PN-Sementa) regarding JAIS’s readiness in terms of teachers and facilities for the 2027 intake under the new policy.
He added that other considerations include introducing a three-session school system where suitable, instead of the current two sessions, as well as expanding infrastructure such as additional classrooms to manage the higher student numbers.
“We are expecting nearly 80,000 Year One applications in 2027, with an estimated shortfall of 880 teachers,” he said.
“One of the key strategies is to recruit more teachers to close this gap, depending on the state’s capacity and position.”
Amirudin also said all JAIS school buildings are currently safe and suitable for use, and the state government is prepared to fund repairs if needed upon request from schools or the JAIS Education Division.
On January 20, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced during the launch of the National Education Blueprint (RPN) 2026–2035 that children aged six will be allowed to enter Year One starting next year, on an optional basis depending on parental choice. — Bernama
