ALOR SETAR, Nov 10 — Six more migrant bodies, including a young girl, were recovered from Langkawi waters yesterday after a boat carrying about 100 migrants capsized Saturday near the Malaysia-Thailand maritime border.
Kedah and Perlis Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director First Admiral (M) Romli Mustafa said the latest discoveries bring the total confirmed deaths to seven, with 13 migrants rescued so far, including three yesterday.
“At 3.11pm, the Langkawi Maritime Rescue Sub Centre received a report of two men floating near Kuala Muda Teriang, who were rescued by local fishing boats. At 5pm, the MMEA vessel PETIR 81 recovered the body of a girl, while at 6.01pm a Fisheries Department boat rescued a man who was found alive,” he said.
Five additional female bodies were later found at two separate locations and handed over to the police. The search and rescue operation, expanded to cover 170 square nautical miles, was suspended at 7pm and will resume this morning.
The capsized vessel was one of three boats reportedly carrying around 300 migrants, which sank off Pulau Tarutao. — Bernama
