NEW YORK, May 23 — The Trump administration yesterday revoked Harvard University’s authorization to enroll foreign students—who make up over a quarter of its student body—in a sharp escalation of the president’s conflict with the prestigious institution.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 — Sixteen foreign nationals, including seven children, were rescued from forced labour during a police operation conducted yesterday.
The operation, codenamed Op Pintas Mega, was led by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Division under Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ D3), and spanned four locations across Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, Harian Metro reported.
In addition to the rescues, authorities also detained 45 foreign nationals for various immigration offences.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, Principal Assistant Director of Bukit Aman D3, said the first raid took place at a restaurant in Bandar Tasik Puteri, Rawang, at 12.05am.
During the raid, five teenage boys aged 16 and 17 — four from Myanmar and one from Indonesia — were rescued under Section 44 of the Atipsom Act.
“Two men, a local and an Indian national, believed to be the employer and supervisor of the underage workers, were arrested,” Soffian said.
The same raid also resulted in the detention of 20 individuals aged 22 to 45 — including 10 Myanmar nationals, four Indians, two Bangladeshis, and two Indonesians.
A second raid at a construction site in Pantai Dalam led to the rescue of eight men believed to be victims of forced labour, along with the arrest of nine suspects aged 35 to 51, including a local site supervisor.
In a third operation at a car workshop in Puchong Utama at 4.16pm, police rescued two boys aged 14 and 17. One employer was detained.
Just minutes later, a fourth raid at a nearby car workshop led to the rescue of another young boy from Myanmar. Authorities also arrested a 45-year-old local man, believed to be the employer, along with two Myanmar nationals.
All rescued individuals have been referred to district police headquarters in Gombak, Brickfields, and Subang Jaya for further action.
Soffian noted that the multi-agency operation also involved the Immigration Department, Labour Department, the Council for Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (MAPO), and the Home Ministry. The effort focused on identifying victims of human trafficking and forced labour, especially among vulnerable groups.
