ANADOLU, April 23 — A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Türkiye today, with its epicentre located in the Silivri district of Istanbul, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) confirmed, as reported by Anadolu Ajansi (AA).

The quake occurred at 12.49pm local time (0949 GMT) and was strongly felt throughout Istanbul and nearby provinces, prompting many residents to evacuate buildings in fear.

A second tremor, measuring 4.9 in magnitude, was recorded at 1.02pm (1002 GMT), with its epicentre off the coast of Büyükçekmece in the Sea of Marmara.

AFAD reported that all relevant agencies have been activated, with field teams currently conducting assessments to determine any potential damage and ensure public safety.

The agency added that emergency response operations are ongoing and closely monitored.

No immediate reports of casualties or major damage have been received so far.
