SYDNEY, Sept 8 — A Korean-born New Zealand woman went on trial today in Auckland, accused of murdering her two children whose bodies were found in suitcases inside an abandoned storage locker bought at an online auction.

The 44-year-old, Hakyung-Lee, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to New Zealand media, she allegedly killed her children — aged eight and six — in 2018, a year after their father died of cancer, court filings revealed.

Lee moved to South Korea later that year and was extradited back to New Zealand in November 2022. Local reports said she kept her head lowered during jury selection at the High Court and avoided looking at prospective jurors. She is representing herself in the trial, with the support of two lawyers.

Police opened a homicide investigation in 2022 after the children’s remains were discovered by a family sorting through a storage unit they had purchased. Authorities confirmed the family who made the discovery was not linked to the case. — Reuters
