TAIPEI, Sept 25 — Taiwan’s fire department on Thursday lowered the death toll from this week’s typhoon on the island’s remote east coast to 14, while confirming that 33 people remain missing.

The fatalities occurred after heavy rains from Super Typhoon Ragasa’s outer bands triggered the overflow of a barrier lake in Hualien county, sending a torrent of water into the small town of Guangfu.

Authorities had initially reported 17 deaths on Wednesday but revised the figure to 14, citing duplicate counts. The number of people listed as missing was also reduced to 33, down from 152, as officials continue efforts to trace those still out of contact. — Reuters
