TAWAU, Oct 9 — The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has allocated RM62.76 million to implement 18 public infrastructure projects in Tawau, benefiting more than 200,000 residents.
Minister Nga Kor Ming said the projects, focused on enhancing urban wellbeing, are being carried out throughout the year under the supervision of KPKT’s agencies.
“One of the key projects is a RM43 million sanitary landfill in Bukit Gemok, which is vital to ensure Tawau remains clean, green, vibrant, and progressive as one of Sabah’s main tourism destinations,” he told reporters after visiting Pelita Public Park during the KPKT Sentuhan Kasih Tour on Wednesday.
Other initiatives include the beautification and landscaping of Tawau town, the construction of a new Fire and Rescue Department station and staff quarters in Merotai, and upgrades to public markets.
Nga added that KPKT had also approved several projects elsewhere in Sabah, such as the RM20 million Kota Kinabalu Botanical Garden and a RM30 million two-storey car park in Foh Sang, Kota Kinabalu.
“Sandakan also received RM35 million for its sanitary landfill site,” he said, noting that KPKT has been recognised by the Prime Minister’s Department’s Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) as the most appreciated ministry, having successfully completed 11,807 public infrastructure projects between 2023 and 2024. — The Borneo Post
