MIRI, Sept 8 — A 19-year-old student sustained injuries after falling while hiking with two friends at Bukit Kasut, Niah National Park, yesterday afternoon.

The skills institute student was found in a semi-conscious condition after the fall.

Batu Niah fire station chief Rary Binjie said an emergency call was received at 3.47pm, and a rescue team led by Awang Azdwan was immediately dispatched to the site, located about 7km from the station.

“Upon arriving at the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) counter, we were informed that the victim had fallen onto a rock, injuring her waist and leaving her unable to move.

“To reach her, rescuers had to travel 1km by boat, trek 1.5km, and climb a hill before arriving at the cliff where she was found, about 150 feet high,” he said in a statement today.

The team administered first aid and stabilised the victim, who was then carried down the hill on a special stretcher to the Niah riverbank while still semi-conscious.

She was transported by boat to Pekan Niah Waterfront, where she was handed over to a Ministry of Health (MoH) ambulance team at 7.10pm. The operation concluded at 7.32pm.

The rescue involved five firefighters in one fire engine, assisted by five SFC officers, four police personnel, and two MoH staff. — The Borneo Post
