KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — The inclusion of Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz in Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) could help attract broader support for the party’s mission to build a more progressive, just, and inclusive Malaysia, said Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.

He said Tengku Zafrul’s move reflects PKR’s ongoing commitment to champion politics grounded in ideas, expertise, and integrity.

“His experience is expected to bring added value to KEADILAN,” Muhammad Kamil said in a post on X yesterday.

Muhammad Kamil, who also serves as political secretary to the Finance Minister, added that PKR’s openness in welcoming professionals reflects the party’s evolution as a mature platform ready to lead the country’s future.

He also noted that the process of joining PKR must adhere to the procedures set by the party’s secretary-general.

Tengku Zafrul announced yesterday his resignation from his positions in UMNO—including as Supreme Council Member, Kota Raja Division Chief, and party member—to join PKR.

His move has triggered mixed reactions, with UMNO president and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi calling for the reinstatement of UMNO’s allocation of seven ministerial posts following Zafrul’s departure.

Ahmad Zahid confirmed today that UMNO executive secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan had received Tengku Zafrul’s resignation letter.

However, PKR secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh said the party has yet to receive an official membership application from Tengku Zafrul. — Bernama
