GENEVA, June 13 — Switzerland has offered to host the potential signing of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, the Swiss foreign ministry told AFP on Friday.
BANGKOK, June 12 — Thailand’s Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has died at the age of 47, the royal palace said today, following multiple health complications and nearly four years in a coma.
She was admitted to hospital in December 2022 after collapsing from a heart condition during a visit to Nakhon Ratchasima in northeastern Thailand and was later airlifted to Bangkok for treatment.
According to a palace statement, she passed away yesterday evening after her condition deteriorated due to an intra-abdominal infection, colitis, low blood pressure, arrhythmias, and blood clotting disorders.
Popularly known as Princess Pa, she was born on December 7, 1978, to then Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali.
She is remembered in Thailand for her public service, efforts to improve conditions for female prisoners, and her diplomatic work.
She studied law at Cornell University, earning both a master’s degree and a doctorate, and worked as an attorney in the Thai Office of the Attorney-General from 2006 to 2011.
From 2012 to 2014, she served as Thailand’s ambassador to Austria, Slovenia, and Slovakia before returning to the attorney-general’s office in Bangkok.
She also established a charity focused on protecting the rights of female inmates, especially pregnant prisoners.
In 2017, she was appointed UN goodwill ambassador for the rule of law in Southeast Asia by the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
She joined the military in 2021, attaining the rank of general and serving as a chief of staff in the Royal Security Command.
The princess was one of King Vajiralongkorn’s three children with formal titles eligible for succession under the constitution. Thailand’s Queen Mother died at the age of 93 last October.
The palace said royal funeral rites will be held, while the government is expected to declare a period of national mourning. — Reuters
