WASHINGTON, July 1 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit the White House next week for talks with President Donald Trump, as the U.S. intensifies efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, a U.S. official confirmed on Monday.
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 13 — The Malaysian government is exploring the possibility of providing additional social assistance to refugees registered with both the government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including granting them legal employment rights.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, stated that the proposal is still under review, considering labor demands and sector-specific conditions. She emphasized that approval would only be granted once all refugees and asylum seekers are officially registered with the government.
She also highlighted that Malaysia follows the National Security Council Directive No. 23, revised in 2023, to manage refugees and asylum seekers, outlining the roles of government agencies.
In response to a parliamentary question from Teresa Kok (PH-Seputeh) on whether refugees could help address the labor shortage, Dr. Zaliha noted that while Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it provides humanitarian aid to Rohingya and other refugees. These groups are allowed temporary stay before being resettled in a third country or returning home.
