TEHRAN, March 21 — Thousands of Muslims in Iran attended Eid al-Fitr prayers on Saturday to mark the end of Ramadan, even as conflict rages across the Middle East, according to state television footage.

As a predominantly Shia country, Iran celebrated the conclusion of the Islamic holy month a day after most Sunni-majority Muslim nations.

At dawn, worshippers gathered at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque, named after the founder of the Islamic Republic. Overflow crowds prayed outside, with state TV showing packed areas surrounding the mosque despite the ongoing threat of attacks.

The Iranian capital has faced near-daily bombardments since a joint US-Israeli operation began on February 28, killing senior officials, including the country’s supreme leader. Overnight strikes reportedly hit several districts in Tehran, its outskirts, and the central city of Isfahan, according to the Fars news agency.

State television also broadcasted prayer gatherings in other parts of Iran, including Arak, Zahedan, and Abadan. — AFP
