TOKYO, Jan 15 — Police have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing two men, killing one, during a court-ordered eviction at his apartment in Tokyo, Kyodo News reported.

The 40-year-old suspect, who identified himself as Hiroshi Yamamoto, was detained several hundred metres from the apartment in Suginami Ward on suspicion of attempted murder. A kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.

One victim, an employee of a rent guarantee company, later died, while the other, a court enforcement officer, remained conscious. Both men were in their 60s.

According to an investigative source, the suspect had fallen behind on rent payments. He reportedly admitted to the attack, saying he stabbed the two men after losing his place to live and had intended to take his own life as well.

Police received an emergency call at about 10.15am. When the two men arrived to carry out the eviction, they found the suspect holding a box emitting smoke. As they attempted to flee, he allegedly stabbed the court officer in the chest and the other man in the back.

A fire also broke out inside the apartment after the suspect ignited a gas cylinder used for a portable stove. The Tokyo District Court described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and said it would review safety measures for enforcement officers. — Bernama-Kyodo
