TOKYO, Dec 8 — Tokyo police have launched an investigation after the severed head and limbs of a baby were found in a freezer at an adult entertainment business in the city’s Sumida Ward, The Japan Times reported.

The gruesome discovery was made on Saturday evening when an employee, while cleaning a refrigerator, came across what appeared to be a child’s head and alerted the police at around 9pm.

Upon searching the premises, officers found the decapitated head wrapped in a plastic bag inside the freezer, with the infant’s arms and legs placed beneath it in a food container, according to the report.

Authorities believe the remains belonged to an infant estimated to be under one year old. The torso has yet to be found, and the baby’s gender remains unknown.

Police are treating the case as suspected mutilation and abandonment of a corpse, and have cordoned off the building near Kinshichō Station as investigations continue.

A 35-year-old restaurant worker told the news outlet he saw police tape at the scene but was unsure what had happened, noting that the premises is commonly used as a waiting area for sex workers. Another nearby resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was shocked that such an incident could occur in what she described as a “rough neighbourhood.”

Investigators are working to identify the infant and determine how the remains were brought to the site. No arrests have been made so far, and no claims of responsibility have been reported.
