WASHINGTON, April 8 — President Donald Trump told AFP yesterday that the United States had achieved a “total and complete victory” after reaching a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran.
“Total and complete victory. 100 per cent. No question about it,” Trump said in a brief phone interview shortly after the truce was announced.
When asked whether he might resume his earlier threats to target Iran’s civilian power plants and bridges if the deal collapsed, Trump declined to give a definitive answer. “You’re going to have to see,” he said.
Trump, however, assured that Iran’s enriched uranium would be “perfectly taken care of” under the agreement, a central concern in the conflict aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. “That will be perfectly taken care of or I wouldn’t have settled,” he added, without providing further details.
The US president also indicated that China may have played a role in bringing Iran to the negotiating table. Trump is scheduled to visit Beijing in May to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. “I hear yes,” he said when asked if Beijing had helped persuade Tehran to negotiate the ceasefire. — AFP
