NEW YORK, May 23 — The Trump administration yesterday revoked Harvard University’s authorization to enroll foreign students—who make up over a quarter of its student body—in a sharp escalation of the president’s conflict with the prestigious institution.
WASHINGTON, May 5 — US President Donald Trump announced yesterday that he had instructed officials to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz prison, the infamous federal facility located on a small island in California that closed six decades ago.
The prison will be used to incarcerate “America’s most ruthless and violent offenders,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, adding that the facility will be “substantially enlarged.”
Alcatraz, which closed in 1963 due to high operating costs after only 29 years of operation, is now a popular tourist attraction, according to the US Bureau of Prisons. Situated two kilometers off the coast of San Francisco, it had a capacity of just 336 inmates and housed notorious criminals, including Prohibition-era mobster Al Capone, while also witnessing numerous dramatic escape attempts.
Trump has made combating crime—especially crimes committed by migrants—a central focus of his second term in office.
“When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals and keep them far from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” Trump stated yesterday.
“No longer will we tolerate these serial offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets,” he added. — AFP
