BANGKOK, Dec 13 — US President Donald Trump said Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire to end deadly clashes along their disputed border, which have killed at least 20 people and displaced about half a million this week.

Trump said he held talks with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and that both sides agreed to halt all shooting from Friday evening and return to a peace accord reached in July with the help of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anutin confirmed the call went well and said Cambodia had agreed to comply with the ceasefire, stressing that any violations must be addressed by the party responsible.

The United States, China and Malaysia previously helped broker a truce between the two neighbours, whose 800-kilometre border has long been disputed. Thailand had suspended the agreement last month after its soldiers were injured by landmines.

Evacuees on both sides welcomed the ceasefire, expressing hope for peace through dialogue and an end to the fighting. — AFP
