WASHINGTON, Dec 6 — Donald Trump stole the spotlight at the FIFA 2026 World Cup draw on Friday, overshadowing the football-focused event with his signature flair.

The US president received FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize from Gianni Infantino, who praised Trump’s achievements and handed him a gold medal, prompting Trump to don it immediately. Despite criticism from rights groups and mockery from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, Trump remained unfazed.

The event took a surreal turn when Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum joined Infantino on stage for the draw. While the leaders performed the draw, Trump dominated attention, joking and holding up the USA strip to laughter.

Trump stayed long after the ceremony, chatting with Carney and Sheinbaum, and even danced to “YMCA” performed by the Village People. Behind the scenes, the three leaders held talks to ease tensions ahead of the tournament.

The event capped off with Trump touring the Kennedy Center, which he humorously dubbed the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” — AFP
