LOS ANGELES, Dec 7 — Spectacular lava fountains burst from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on Saturday, US volcanologists said, nearly a year after one of the world’s most active volcanoes began its latest eruptive phase.
WASHINGTON, Oct 17 — US President Donald Trump warned yesterday that he would “go in and kill” Hamas if the group continues killing people in Gaza, apparently referring to recent shootings of Palestinian civilians following a ceasefire deal with Israel.
The remarks came just days after Trump said the Hamas shootings — including public executions — “didn’t bother me much,” describing the victims as gang members.
“If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not part of the deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
He did not clarify what he meant by “we,” but said on Wednesday that “we won’t need the US military” to intervene in Gaza.
Since the partial withdrawal of Israeli forces under the US-backed 20-point ceasefire agreement, Hamas has tightened its control over Gaza’s devastated cities, carrying out crackdowns and executing alleged collaborators in public.
US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper on Wednesday urged Hamas to stop shooting Palestinian civilians and comply with Trump’s plan. However, Trump himself had appeared unconcerned about the violence.
“That didn’t bother me much, to be honest with you. That’s OK. It’s a couple of very bad gangs. It’s very different from other countries,” Trump said during a White House cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
During his trip to Israel and Egypt on Monday to mark the Gaza truce, Trump said Hamas had been “open” about wanting to “end the problems” in the war-torn enclave.
“They have been open about it, and we gave them an approval for a period of time,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One. — AFP
