WASHINGTON, Sept 13 — US President Donald Trump has called on NATO allies to halt purchases of Russian oil and join the US in imposing sweeping sanctions on Moscow to help end the war in Ukraine.

“I am prepared to impose major sanctions on Russia once all NATO members have agreed and begun to do the same, and when they completely stop buying oil from Russia,” he wrote in a social media post.

Trump also proposed that NATO collectively impose tariffs of between 50 and 100 per cent on China to curb its economic support for Russia.

The call comes after Trump’s earlier warnings of sanctions on Moscow and secondary sanctions targeting countries continuing to buy Russian oil, including major importers China and India.

While the president has already slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods over its ongoing Russian oil imports, he has yet to take similar measures against China. — Reuters
