JOHOR BARU, Feb 19 — This year’s Johor Bahru Chingay Procession is expected to attract over 400,000 visitors, continuing a tradition that dates back more than 150 years.

Tunku Temenggong Johor, Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim, officiated the event by striking a gong at Jalan Wong Ah Fook last night. The ceremony was attended by state Unity, Heritage, and Culture Committee chairman K. Raven Kumar, Tourism Johor director Sharil Nizam Abdul Rahim, and Johor Bahru Tiong Hua Association president Ho Sow Tong.

The grand procession will feature over 85 elaborately decorated floats traveling a 7.8-kilometer route through key city streets before returning to Xing Gong Temple.

Ho praised Johor’s harmonious multi-racial ties under Sultan Ibrahim’s leadership and expressed hopes for the event to be recognized as a National Cultural Heritage and by UNESCO. He also highlighted Singapore’s efforts in nominating both the Singapore and Johor Bahru Chingay celebrations for UNESCO recognition.

“May this dream come true,” he said. — Bernama
