BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 7 — Residents in the Lengkok Perindustrian Bukit Minyak area were startled this afternoon by an underground explosion near a sewer line, which emitted smoke into the air.

According to Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant operations director John Sagun Francis, an emergency call was received at 2.46pm, prompting the immediate dispatch of a response team.

“Firefighters arrived to find the explosion had occurred near a sewer line, accompanied by a strong gas odour and visible smoke. They conducted an initial assessment and monitored the surrounding air quality, including checking pH levels,” he said in a statement.

The Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) unit from the Sungai Bakap Fire and Rescue Station also assisted in the operation. Tests revealed that the liquid in the sewer had a neutral pH.

Further investigation confirmed that the sewer line is under the responsibility of Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), which has been notified for follow-up action.

The operation ended at 4.38pm. No injuries were reported. — Bernama
