BANGKOK, Dec 10 — Malaysia’s national taekwondo team captured their first gold medal at the Thailand SEA Games 2025, triumphing in the women’s recognised team poomsae event.

The trio of Seah Jing Ying, Wong Zin, and Yow Mei Yee, initially not seen as favourites, impressed the judges with their agility, scoring 8.560 points in the final at Fashion Island shopping mall. They narrowly defeated Thailand’s Chonlakorn Chayawatto, Chutikarn Lapnitayapan, and Ratchadawan Tapaenthong, who took silver with 8.450 points.

Jing Ying said the team was surprised to win gold, especially under the pressure of competing against the host nation supported by a strong crowd. She added that earlier controversy involving teammates Jason Loo Jun Wei and Nur Humaira Abdul Karim in the mixed pair event did not distract them. “We stayed focused on ourselves and didn’t let other issues affect our performance,” she said.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s main gold hopes, Jason Loo and Nur Humaira, were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a judges’ decision awarded victory to Thailand’s Chonlakorn Chayawatto and Thana Kiewailerd. Despite Malaysia’s protest, the ruling, based on performance aspects, was upheld. — Bernama
