IPOH, June 9 — A tragic accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a Perodua Alza MPV on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik early this morning has claimed at least 15 lives.‍

IPOH, June 9 — A tragic accident involving a bus carrying students from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) and a Perodua Alza MPV on the East-West Highway in Banun, Gerik early this morning has claimed at least 15 lives.

According to national news agency Bernama, the Hulu Perak Civil Defence Force (APM) operations centre received an emergency call from Gerik Hospital about the collision at 1.10am.

APM confirmed in a statement that 48 individuals were involved in the crash, with 13 confirmed dead at the scene and two more succumbing to their injuries in hospital.

The bus was reportedly en route from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim extended his condolences to the families of the victims and instructed the Ministry of Higher Education to coordinate necessary assistance.

“This heartbreaking tragedy should be a reminder to all to prioritise safety and avoid rushing to reach a destination. Life is too precious to be lost this way,” he said in a Facebook post.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, in a separate post, also conveyed his condolences and assured that the ministry will extend all necessary support to those affected, with further updates to follow.
