WASHINGTON, Feb 25 — US forces have boarded a third tanker in the Indian Ocean after it attempted to evade President Donald Trump’s blockade on sanctioned vessels from the Caribbean, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The Pentagon stated that the tanker, identified as Bertha, was tracked from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean before US personnel descended from helicopters to secure the ship during an overnight operation.

Officials said the vessel was operating in defiance of the quarantine on sanctioned ships and tried to escape enforcement. This marks the third tanker intercepted in the Indian Ocean this month and the tenth overall since the blockade was implemented in December.

The Pentagon added that it will continue to restrict illicit actors and their proxies from moving freely at sea. However, US authorities noted that the seized ships represent only a small portion of the estimated 800 sanctioned “shadow fleet” vessels still operating worldwide. — AFP
