KUANTAN, March 26 — The Kuantan City Council (MBK) is taking immediate steps to address the issue of obesity, which affects 30 percent of its employees.

Kuantan Mayor Datuk Razihan Adzharuddin revealed that out of MBK’s more than 1,300 staff, a significant portion struggles with weight issues, raising concerns about their lifestyle habits.

“This is a serious and alarming issue. We recently appointed a panel clinic, which enabled us to assess the overall health status of our employees. A review found that 30 percent of MBK staff fall into the obese category with excessively high Body Mass Index (BMI) readings,” he said after the Kuantan Ramadhan Bazaar Best Organiser and Trader Awards ceremony yesterday.

At the event, five out of 21 organisers were recognized as Best Organisers, while 25 traders were selected as Best Traders from a pool of 1,159 across 31 venues in the district.

To tackle the obesity issue, Razihan mentioned that as a temporary measure, the council would shut down elevators for a day to encourage staff to take the stairs. — Bernama
