KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China’s support for Malaysia as this year’s ASEAN Chair and affirmed China’s readiness to sign the ASEAN-China Free Trade Upgrade Protocol with regional partners as soon as possible.

He emphasized that China and ASEAN will stand united against decoupling, supply chain disruptions, and tariff abuses, advocating instead for openness, inclusivity, solidarity, and cooperation in response to global challenges.

Xi added that China is committed to working with ASEAN to counter global instability and uncertainty by contributing the region’s stability and certainty.

According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Xi made these remarks during bilateral talks with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya yesterday, part of his three-day state visit to Malaysia that began on Tuesday.

He also praised Malaysia’s ASEAN theme for the year, “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” saying it demonstrates a deep understanding of today’s international dynamics. — Bernama
