MEXICO CITY, June 18 — Colombia winger Luis Diaz delivered a standout performance at a lively Azteca Stadium as his side returned to World Cup action with a 3-1 Group K victory over debutants Uzbekistan on Wednesday.

Having missed out on the 2022 tournament in Qatar, Colombia started slowly but took the lead in the 41st minute when Diaz’s expertly delivered cross into the box was turned in by Daniel Munoz, who had slipped in behind the defence.

Uzbekistan levelled in the 60th minute after Camilo Vargas failed to hold a shot from Eldor Shomurodov, allowing Abbosbek Fayzullaev to head home from close range.

However, Diaz restored Colombia’s advantage five minutes later, finishing calmly from the left side of the penalty area.

Substitute Jaminton Campaz sealed the win with a stoppage-time header, sending Colombia to the top of Group K after Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo drew 1-1.
