HONG KONG, June 18 — Hong Kong’s Observatory raised its highest-level black rainstorm warning at 12.55pm local time (0455 GMT/12.55pm Malaysian time) today, ordering schools to close and some businesses to suspend operations as heavy rain threatened severe flooding.
The Observatory said rainfall could exceed 70 millimetres per hour, urging residents to stay indoors and remain alert to dangerous conditions. It is the second time this year the black rain warning has been issued, following an earlier instance on June 8.
The financial hub and much of southern China have been affected by several days of heavy downpours linked to an active southwest monsoon and a persistent low-pressure trough.
Strong winds have also been reported, with gusts reaching around 80km/h recorded in Tai O in Hong Kong’s southwest, according to the Observatory.
The storm comes just ahead of tomorrow’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday, when many residents are expected to travel during the long weekend.
Meanwhile, authorities in Shenzhen, across the border in mainland China, issued a red rainstorm alert and advised residents to avoid low-lying, flood-prone and other hazardous areas, warning of heightened risks of landslides, flash floods and related disasters. — Reuters
