PUTRAJAYA, June 16 — The Education Ministry (MOE) aims to achieve over 95% secondary school enrolment as the Education (Amendment) Act 2025 is set to take effect soon.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said Malaysia’s strong primary school enrolment—rising from about 92% in 2003 to over 99% in 2026—shows the success of compulsory education policies, which the government now hopes to extend to secondary education.

He said current secondary enrolment stands at around 94%, and the ministry expects this to exceed 95% once the amended law is enforced.

“The goal is not just primary education anymore. We want all Malaysian children to complete secondary school through Form Five,” he said at an MOE event today.

The Dewan Rakyat passed the Education (Amendment) Bill 2025 last July, expanding compulsory education to include secondary schooling, requiring all Malaysian children to complete it.

Wong said the policy is meant to encourage, not punish, parents and students to ensure completion of secondary education.

He also said the ministry is expanding its K9 and K11 school models to improve access, with 26 K9 schools and nine K11 schools currently operating nationwide.

Seven more K11 schools are planned next year in states including Perak, Terengganu, Kelantan, Pahang and Sabah, bringing the total to 16.- Bernama
