KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a stern warning that local vehicle owners caught renting out their vehicles to foreigners will no longer receive warnings and will instead face immediate legal action in court.

Selangor JPJ deputy director Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat said motorcycles are among the vehicles most frequently rented out, with arrangements made on a daily, weekly or monthly basis at fixed rates.

According to him, the rented vehicles are commonly used by foreigners for business activities such as selling food and transporting gas cylinders and scrap metal.

“These activities not only pose risks to other road users but also constitute violations of the law. Local vehicle owners involved will be prosecuted without compromise,” he said during a press conference at the Selangor JPJ office in Padang Jawa.

He revealed that under the Foreign Driver Operation (Ops Pewa), action had been taken against 239 foreigners in Selangor between January and yesterday.

The most common offences detected included driving without a Competent Driving Licence (CDL), lacking a valid Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM), not possessing a Goods Driving Licence (GDL), and operating without insurance coverage.

During the same period, authorities took action against 304 vehicles, with 95 of them seized for further investigations.

Ahmad Kamarunzaman stressed that vehicle owners, employers and transport companies bear full responsibility for offences committed by individuals driving their vehicles, including foreign nationals.

He added that registered vehicle owners may be prosecuted under Section 109 of the Road Transport Act 1987, while Section 64 of the same Act empowers JPJ to seize vehicles driven by foreigners who do not possess valid driving licences.
