WASHINGTON, April 12 — A US federal appeals court has allowed President Donald Trump’s US$400 million (RM1.5 billion) White House ballroom renovation to proceed temporarily, while also calling for clarification on national security concerns raised by a lower court.

The project involves building a large ballroom on the site of the White House’s East Wing, formerly known for housing the First Lady’s offices, which was demolished in September.

In a 2-1 decision, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit granted the administration permission to continue work until April 17, when it may seek review by the Supreme Court.

The court also directed District Judge Richard Leon to clarify earlier concerns related to White House safety and security.

Last month, Leon had ordered a pause on construction, ruling that Trump required congressional approval for the project.

In his ruling, Leon said Trump is a “steward” of the White House but added: “He is not, however, the owner!”
